The olive is an evergreen tree that produces an edible fruit. The oil of the olive has been a staple in the Mediterranean diet and elsewhere for millennia.

Olive trees grow to a height of up to 12 meters or 40 feet. The trees produce small white flowers that are pollinated by the wind. The beauty of olive trees has been captured in many paintings and they are an indelible part of the landscape of Italy, Greece, and other Mediterranean countries.

Did you know? Botanically speaking, the olive fruit is called a "drupe." This classification also encompasses the peach and plum, "stone fruits" with a rock-like seed or pit in the middle.

The olive branch has long been regarded as a symbol of peace or victory. In the Bible book of Genesis, Noah knew that the flood waters had receded from the earth when a dove was able to bring back a freshly plucked olive leaf. In ancient Greece, an olive branch was held out when approaching a powerful person or entering a temple to supplicate a god such as Athena. Wreaths of olive leaves were worn by brides and Olympic victors.

Depictions of olive branches can be seen on coins from the ancient world and in Medieval European paintings, such as a sixteenth century portrait of Queen Elizabeth I. This symbol is still in use today. For example, the Great Seal of the United States pictures an eagle grasping an olive branch in one talon. A dove holding an olive branch is also an emoji on most electronic devices. Astronaut Neil Armstrong left a gold olive branch on the moon.

4. Draw leaves at the tip of the stem. Olive trees have slender, narrow leaves. For each leaf, first, extend a curved line from the stem to indicate the leaf vein. From the base of this line, extend a pair of curved lines, and bring them together at a point past the end of the vein.

5. Draw additional leaves along the stem. For each, extend a curved line from the stem, and sketch two curved lines around it. Notice how the lines "disappear" behind the olives, giving the drawing depth.

6. Draw leaves on the opposite side of the stem. Again, extend curved lines from the stem to form the leaf veins. Then, draw curved lines from the vein and bring them together at a point just beyond the vein.
